The history of modern biotechnology in Iran goes back to 1980s. The establishment of the National Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in 1989 was a turning point in developing modern methods of biotechnology in the country. Iran has made great progress in biotechnological research, especially over the past decade. With about 15,010 biotechnology experts currently working in the country, Iran is ranked 13th in publishing biotechnology articles in indexed journal in 2017.
Biotechnology is among the seven key industries determining the socioeconomic destiny of communities in the following decades. Iran National Innovation Fund has financed biotech firms continuously and plans to keep on collaborating with these firms in the future. INIF plans to facilitate international cooperation with the purpose of encouraging the positive growth in the sector.
